Inside HerVest is a monthly series where HerVest staff members share exciting facts about their job roles and lives. Here, they share tips for thriving in their industries and things we never knew about them. Today, we talk to our Backend Engineer, Oluwasegun Jimoh. Segun walks us through his daily routines and doles out power tips for transitioning into Tech. Enjoy the conversation.

Let’s meet you, please?

I’m Oluwasegun Olalekan Jimoh and I am a Software Engineer with a focus on backend engineering. I love to describe myself as a happy, people person. I am a driven individual who isn’t afraid to face challenges. When I am not coding, I’m learning, singing, writing songs, or thinking of how to solve a problem.

How would you describe your job to a 7-year-old?

Hey Kiddo, do you play Tic-Tac-Toe on your tab and wonder who made it? Yes, a programmer made it and that’s what I do.

Asides from being a Tech bro, what else do you enjoy doing?

Being with family, singing or writing music. I Love taking pictures too, memories are priceless.

When did you decide you wanted to become a Backend engineer and why?

I’ve always been curious about tech since my childhood. Being a backend engineer makes me really involved in the core of applications.

What’s your favourite part of working with HerVest?

The culture and the people. Great work-life balance.

What advice would you give a youngin finding it hard to transition into tech?

Be prepared to learn and unlearn. You won’t find all the answers on the internet. You also have to fuel your creativity too and don’t wait until you have a mentor.

One misconception people have about your job?

“Why does it take so long, should be like a click of a button”. Yeah, should be but after clicking the button there are lots of processes that you don’t even get to see, the logic. People expect it to be simple to do. Well no pressure, We are here to do the difficult part so that our users can enjoy our apps with ease like a click of a button.

What’s the weirdest question that you’ve been asked as an engineer?

“What exactly do you people do?

How has HerVest impacted your money habit?

A lot, this year alone I have joined webinars/boot camps hosted by HerVest and you can tell with my savings balance. I’m sorry I can’t share that figure. Xoxo. I have a formula of 50:30:20::10 ( 50% for needs, 30% for Emergencies, 20% For Savings, and 10% for Tithe).

On a scale of 10, how well do you enjoy your job?

I love it! 10

What would it be if you could get an unlimited supply of one thing?

Wisdom (I don’t want to perish).

If you had to be any cartoon character, which would it be?

Superman. That guy has been blessed from birth. In his time, he was the 1% of the 1%. He also takes up responsibilities and has very good leadership skills.

Your favourite quote?

Often you never realize a moment’s worth before it becomes a memory.”

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received from any of your colleagues at work?

It’s our little secret.

What book or movie are you currently watching?

Make Today Count by John C. Maxwell.

Imagine you were at your TEDTALK, giving a 30 seconds speech to tech enthusiasts ending with “This is why tech is the future”.

We’re privileged to be living in a time where science and technology can assist us, make our lives easier and rethink the ways we go about our daily lives.

The technology we’re already exposed to and accustomed to has paved the way for us to innovate further, and this list of current and future technologies certainly have the potential to change our lives even more.

From Space Tourism, the Colonisation of other planets, Robots in space and the workplace, Electric/self-driving cars, flying cars, and hyper-fast trains; these technologies will “probably” change our lives forever over the coming decade and beyond.

There is so much more, a lot is being powered with tech and I believe this is why tech is the future.

Thank you, Segun. This was an intellectually engaging conversation.
